Media Statement: UI Health’s Response to INA 10-day Notice of Intent to Strike

Today, UI Health learned the Illinois Nurses Association (INA) filed a 10-day notice of intent to strike with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board. In informing UI Health of this action, the INA has indicated its plans for a potential seven-day work stoppage for registered nurses covered under the Registered Nurse Collective Bargaining Agreement, and a five-day work stoppage for licensed practical nurses covered under the Licensed Practical Nurse Collective Bargaining Agreement. The potential work stoppages may commence as soon as 7 a.m., Monday, Aug. 19. While this action means that the INA can opt to strike, it does not mean that they will. While we are disappointed the INA arrived at this action, we remain committed to maintaining all critical operations of the University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics during a potential work stoppage.

We believe that much can be resolved through further dialogue and have scheduled additional negotiation sessions with the INA and the assigned federal mediator Aug. 14-16. We are hopeful that the INA will agree to schedule additional negotiation sessions to reach agreements that are beneficial to both parties.

We value the critical role our nurses and other health care professionals play in fulfilling our mission to provide vital care for our community. Should a work stoppage occur, we have comprehensive plans in place, including a process to secure nursing agency staff, to ensure ongoing operations and safe patient care at the University of Illinois Hospital & Clinics.
